What is Straight Street Camp?
Straight Street camp is a two-week camp designed for children raising first through fifth grades who have been identified by their school as experiencing social, spiritual, academic and/or financial poverty. The program will offer these children enjoyable opportunities to learn at every level – academic, physical, spiritual, and social-emotional - to prevent summer learning loss and enrich the students with skills and experiences that make them better students and enhance their wellness as a whole child..
What to expect
Academic curriculum will be developed and delivered by professional educators using district data to target the most challenging skills and standards. Professional school counselors and mental health counselors will deliver social emotional learning curriculum that will help our campers get along in their schools, express themselves in acceptable and beneficial ways, and demonstrate problem solving and conflict resolution skills, often difficult for children in poverty. Each day will include a period of physical education that is fun for the child but also addresses neurotypical differences prevalent in children today such as attention deficit disorders. Finally, the spiritual component will be incorporated into each day with a biblical teaching in activity.
Our goals are to make a strong positive impact in each campers summer and develop lasting relationships that lead towards a brighter future in our campers. Children that attend Straight Street Camp will enter school in August with increased readiness and academic and interpersonal skills. Additionally, it is our goal that our wellness campers will develop or strengthen their personal relationship with Jesus, as we are a Christ-centered organization and we believe all peoples’ lives are improved by personal relationship with Him.
